A time for growth!
2010 continues to look like it's shaping up to be a good year. We were blessed with a fairly mild winter, and spring looks like it's coming early. And it's not just the grass that has started growing. We are too!
We're excited to welcome several new members to our Redmond Kiwanis club. And we have a few more people who are still checking us out to see if they would like to join our efforts.
It's very important that our new members feel welcome. Their first experiences with us will set the tone for their enthusiasm and involvement, hopefully for many years to come.
I would like to encourage every one of us to get to know our new members. Try sitting beside someone you don't know yet at our lunch meetings and just get to know them a little. After all, it's our people that make Kiwanis such a fantastic and fun organization.
I would also like to take a moment and thank Jane Dixson for her many years of service to our club. As you may know, Jane will be moving from Central Oregon at the end of this month. She has been incredibly supportive and generous and she will be missed very much.
President Tory

WINE RAFFLE NETS MORE THAN $1,400 FOR YOUTH PROJECTS
The 11th annual wine raffle of 100 bottles of wine was completed at the March 3 meeting, raising nearly $1,500 for youth projects.
Kiwanian Tim Brown was the first prize winner, garnering 60 bottles of wine. New member Noah vonBorstel sold the second place ticket to an associate at John L. Scott Real Estate, Brenda Johnson, who received 30 bottles of wine. The third place winner was Tony Lester of Bend who received 10 bottles of wine.
Although members had brought in 76 bottles of wine for the raffle, other members had made cash contributions to buy wine, so Ron Munkres was able to put the 100-bottle prize together at no additional cost to the project.
LIVESTOCK AUCTION TO MOVE OUTSIDE THIS YEAR
Karen Murray,
Chuck Meyer, Jared Larkin, Kim Seely and John Walter recently attended a livestock
auction meeting.
As some of you may know, we will not have access to the Hooker Creek Arena
on Saturday night for the livestock auction this year. The fair board has
booked a concert in the arena on Saturday night.
This put the
decision group into a position of trying to figure out where to have this
year's livestock auction. After a very professionally done meeting conducted
by Candi Bothum, the group came to this preliminary decision:
The buyers' barbecue will be in the tent used by different singers and other
acts near the water feature in the middle of the fairgrounds. Afterward, buyers
will go to the beef arena for the parade of champions and the beef auction.
Subsequently the buyers will be transported to the pig barn and sheep barn
for two separate auctions. Each area has shaded protection from the sun.
The next meeting is Monday, March 15th, starting at 5:30 pm at the OSU Extension office, if any of you want to attend. If you have comments, ideas, questions, or different plans to present, please call one of us who attended the first meeting.
This is a change
back to how the barbecue and auction were set up when we first moved to the
new fairgrounds in 1999. How we sell that change will have a major impact
on the success of this year's auction.
I look forward to hearing from many of you, because it is my management philosophy
that we need to widen the circle and catch every good idea that we can.
Thanks for your
help.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE PREPARES TO AWARD $7,000
Your scholarship
committee is preparing to award $7,000 in scholarships to Redmond graduates
this spring. Applications are in place at area high schools. Deadline for
completing them is April 5.
The club has budgeted $3,000, and the Vern and Madeline Patrick fund will
award another $1,000. The Hodecker Family has also funded $2,000 which we
award, and this year the club will award a $1,000 Jim Mitchell memorial scholarship
in honor of a past lieutenant governor which is funded by the seven clubs
in our division.
Members of the scholarship committee are Carl Vertrees, Linda Trout, Mike Patrick, John Duff, Carl Anderson and Jerry Andres.
Beginning the first week of April the committee will pore over the applications, then meet to select perhaps a dozen finalists for interviews before the May awards ceremonies.
The club's scholarships, most for $500, are awarded in memory of people connected with Kiwanis. $2,000 in general scholarships are awarded in the name of Don Rich, a long-time member and athletic director at Redmond High School. A $500 music scholarship memorializes Mike Sutherland, and another $500 nursing scholarship honors Linda Anderson.
The Vern and Madeline Patrick Scholarship is self-perpetuating by funds invested by Vern Patrick, including memorials to him and his wife. It is usually $1,000 with up to three additional renewals at $1,000 each.
The $2,000 awarded in Fred Hodecker's name, are funded by the Hodecker Family Fund in the Oregon Community Foundation.
The $1,000 Jim Mitchell scholarship was created by the Kiwanis clubs of Division 78 after Mitchell's death. We contribute $150 each year, and award the $1,000 every seventh year.
If you are interested in helping with the scholarship screenings, contact any member of the committee.
NOAH vonBORSTEL BECOMES YEAR'S FOURTH NEW MEMBER
Noah vonBorstel is the club's fourth new member since the beginning of the year. A broker at John L. Scott Real Estate, Noah was sponsored by Tim Brown. Noah took an active role in the club's wine raffle even before joining. He also sold the second place winning ticket to one of his colleagues, Brenda Johnson.
A native of Grass Valley, vonBorstel is a graduate of Oregon State University with a degree in microbiology and minors in chemistry and business. It was at OSU that he met his wife Turquoise, a native of Culver. He came to Redmond in early 2006, so has seen a major swing in real estate activity in that four-year period. When he's not selling real estate or investment properties, vonBorstel enjoys outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and firearms, and video games.
CLUB PREPARES TO PARTICIPATE IN CENTENNIAL MURAL PROJECT
Redmond Kiwanis Club, working with Heather Richards, Redmond Community Development director, is helping facilitate the development, fabrication and installation of an 8-foot by 40-foot mural depicting the past present and to some degree the future of Redmond as part of the 2010 centennial celebration.
Bud Prince, our community service chair, presented the facts to the Kiwanis board at its February meeting, anticipating expenses of no more than $1,100 depending on contributions.
The city has hired an "artist in residence," Carol Poppenga, who has experience with such projects throughout the Northwest. She is working with students from Redmond Proficiency Academy to draw and paint the mural.
Miller Lumber
and Denfeld Paints have been approached to donate some of the building materials
and painting supplies. A metal top flashing for the mural is being designed,
and Swift Steel will probably be asked for support in fabrication.
The city will likely sink the post holes to support the sign in Centennial
Park for the remainder of the summer, and then it will be transferred to a
building wall adjacent to the park. A vacant downtown storefront is available
for the painting in a visible location.
What can Kiwanis members do?
1. Cut and secure
with screws and liquid nails, the 2 x 2 frame backing for each of the 4x8
sheets.
2. Prime the sheets prior to mid-April.
3. Coat finished artwork with sealer.
4. Install the support posts and mount the panels, and in the fall:
5. Install the mural on a building for permanent display.
