The fair
is here!
It's time to roll up the sleeves, put on the old
shoes (the ones you don't mind getting some pig slop on), and head to
the fairgrounds for our largest volunteer project of the year, the Kiwanis
Livestock Auction.
A lot of you have signed up to help and we appreciate that, but we could
still use more volunteers. We need help next Tuesday morning for animal
weigh-ins. Wednesday morning and afternoon we could use some help with
the animal photos. And we need everyone who can show up to come out
on Saturday for the actual livestock auction. This is a very good opportunity
to help some kids who have worked hard all year long in preparation
for this event.
We also need to finalize some things relative to our upcoming Oktoberfest.
There were some initial questions about how local Doernbecher Children's
Hospital is and whether it is our best choice for an organization to
support with this event.
Our presentation this past Wednesday should have cleared up any doubt
on that issue. The Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland has served
almost 1,800 children from Central Oregon. Children from Central Oregon
who get cancer don't have many choices, because we don't have a children's
oncology unit here. Our children are sent to Doernbecher's in Portland
for treatment.
Incoming president, John Betts, has suggested we select Doernbecher's
as our Oktoberfest focus organization, and I would like to encourage
everyone to support him in this. The organization serves children state-wide
and --having seen their presentation --I think we can all get behind
this organization 100 percent without any qualms about the money we
raise "leaving our area."
We're still looking for a good date to do our work day at Crystal Peaks
Youth Ranch. It seems like the weather went from cold and drizzly straight
to hot, without much in between. At the July board meeting we targeted
Wednesday evening, Sept. 15 as a possibility. I'll work on confirming
a date and get that information to you by our next newsletter. I would
encourage everyone to participate in that work day as well.
And remember Jericho Table, every third and fifth Friday of each month.
This particular service project takes only 2 hours and it's very rewarding
to help people much less fortunate than ourselves.
As you can see, we have a lot going on, and a lot of very worthy causes
we support. Thank you to everyone who has been helping. It's people
like you that give Redmond Kiwanis such a good reputation in this town
and make Kiwanis such a pleasure to be involved with.

LIVESTOCK COMMITTEE MEETS NEXT MONDAY TO FIRM
UP PLANS
For more than 50 years Kiwanis has coordinated
the livestock auction at the Deschutes County Fair, and it remains our
single largest commitment of volunteer hours.
Although Kiwanis is planning to scale back its financial liability in
the annual livestock auction at the Deschutes County Fair next year,
the need for volunteers is just as great this year.
Chairman Jared Larkin has asked members of the livestock auction committee
to meet next Monday, July 26, at 5:30 p.m. at Chuck Meyer's office.
Because there are fewer youth enrolled in the 4-H and FFA livestock
programs this year, part of the reorganization will mean one sales ring
instead of two concurrent auctions.
Livestock auction activities begin on Tuesday, July 27, with weigh-ins
of all of the animals beginning at 7 a.m., and conclude on Sunday, August
1 with the load out.
Volunteers are still needed for weigh-in commitments and for assisting
with the photographs of all the animals on Wednesday. The largest manpower
is needed Saturday afternoon, July 31, for the auction itself beginning
at 2 p.m. To volunteer, call Jared at 526-0507, 350-6877;or jared.larkin@raymondjames.com
.
In addition to recruiting volunteers, Jared also reminds members that
if they are able to purchase an animal - or able to encourage someone
else to buy an animal, that will contribute to the auction's success.
Most of all, have fun!
And remember, next week's meeting is at the 4-H
Food Booth of the North Sister at the fairgrounds at noon. Program will
be provided by the 4-H staff.
The Pacific Northwest District Governor, Patrick Ewing is expecting
to attend the luncheon with Cindy Crowther, our lieutenant governor.
GUBERNATORIAL
CANDIDATE VISITS FROM GRANTS PASS
Claudell King, a veteran member of the
Kiwanis Club of Grants Pass, visited our club meeting June 16 with our
new lieutenant governor designate Jim Underhill from Bend. King has
declared himself a candidate of governor-elect at the district convention
in Spokane in August. If elected to that position, he would assume the
governor's post a year later.

The meeting was called to order at 1:08
p.m. by President Tory Allman after the regular membership meeting at
Izzy's Pizza. Other board members present were: John Betts, Joy Caswell,
Charlie Trainor, Dan Young, John Duff and Carl Vertrees. A quorum was
established.
The board approved the membership application from Randy Van Mehren,
pastor of Emmaus Lutheran Church. He was sponsored by Carl Anderson
and Charlie Trainor. The meeting was adjourned at 1:09 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Carl Vertrees, secretary
MINUTES OF REDMOND KIWANIS BOARD MEETING July
22, 2010
The regular monthly meeting was called to order
at 12:03 p.m. by President Tory Allman in the Kiwanis Board Room of
the Redmond Chamber of Commerce. Other board members present were John
Betts, Carl Vertrees, John Duff, Charlie Trainor, Dan Young, Linda Trout,
Tim Brown, Cory Erickson and David Foote. Ron Munkres, Chuck Meyer and
board member-elect Dave Shirley also attended. A quorum was established.
The minutes of the June meeting were approved as published in the June
newsletter distributed by e-mail.
John Duff presented the financial statements for May showing balances
of $15,487 in the service accounts and $982 in the administrative accounts.
Transfers of $5,000 to the foundation and $3,750 for scholarships are
yet to be made. John noted that the vintage baseball game held in connection
with the city's centennial would probably end up costing about $300.
He also urged board members to study the budget to review unfunded items
before Oct. 1. The treasurer's report was accepted.
Committee reports:
Membership: John Betts reported he plans at least one more orientation
before the end of the administrative year for new members.
Youth Services: John Duff acknowledged the visit of Key Club
Lt. Gov. Amanda Norman at Wednesday meeting and said Key Clubbers would
probably be helping with the livestock auction.
Public Relations: Carl Vertrees noted the club had received favorable
publicity regarding the Centennial Vintage Ballgame.
Social: The board targeted Thursday, September 30, as the date for our
annual installation and awards banquet.
Finance: John Duff reported the joint golf tournament with the Boys
and Girls Clubs of Central Oregon on July 9 drew 127 players and would
probably return about $5,000 to us, slightly down from last year.
Livestock Auction: Chuck Meyer said the livestock committee would
have a final meeting July 26 before this year's auction.
Old Business: President Tory applauded Cory Erickson's efforts
in putting together the Vintage Baseball game staged in connection with
the Centennial and deemed it a success.
Because of needs in the Redmond Police Department's K-9 program, the
board expressed interest in our adopting that as our Governor's canine
project for this year with club and individual contributions. Next year's
governor has designated the Kiwanis-Doernbecher Cancer Program as the
focus.
New Business: Tim Brown said the Oktoberfest committee would
determine a beneficiary at its meeting the week after the livestock
auction.
Central Christian Schools have revised their request
for financial assistance to upgrade their playground.
The total cost is $14,850. More than two years ago the club's foundation
spent $2,500 toward playground improvements at Terrebonne Community
School, but that project has been delayed because of construction at
the school.
The board voted to budget $750 for Lieutenant Governor Jim Underhill's
expenses in the next administrative year.
President Tory also reported the Redmond Library is sponsoring a
volunteer expo on Monday, August 30. He will look into whether
it's an appropriate venue for us and whether space is still available.
Karen Murray had relayed to the board that the Centennial Committee
is sponsoring an event in September as a revival of the old Potato
Festival and requesting that Kiwanis sell baked potatoes. Charlie
Trainor volunteered to look into that event.
President Tory will coordinate with Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch
a date when we can do a service project at the Tumalo facility.
He is targeting September 15.
Ron Munkres, who is chair of the non-profit Buckaroo Breakfast
Association, asked whether Kiwanis would like to take over that
project beginning next year in light of our slightly smaller role in
the livestock auction finances.
The Buckaroo Breakfast is held from 6 to 10 a.m. the Sunday of fair
week, draws more than 1,500, and typically should profit $2,000 to $4,000
each year. Because there is a major corps of faithful volunteers the
main need would be an organizing committee, and Ron said he would continue
to be involved. He said his committee is continually asked where the
proceeds go, and Kiwanis youth projects would be a good answer. The
organization also has a reserve account of more than $20,000 which funds
needed repairs or equipment replacement. Board members and Kiwanis members
were urged to attend the event this year to be better informed for future
discussions after a financial report is available from this year's event.
Secretary Carl Vertrees said the board needs to reconsider its
combination of new member fees and annual dues in light of a
revised schedule of new member fees from Kiwanis International.
John Duff asked the board to consider continuing our joint relationship
with the Boys and Girls Clubs in cosponsoring the annual golf
tournament. He will report to the board after a wrap-up meeting with
Boys and Girls Clubs.
The meeting adjourned at 1:10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Carl Vertrees, Secretary
