Happy New Year! As this new year begins, our Redmond Kiwanis Club is busy with plans to highlight our 75th year.
We should all be proud of the fact that we have been serving the children of Redmond since October 27, 1937. To celebrate this achievement, your board of directors has been talking about a signature community service project.
Several projects have been discussed including extensive work at Fireman's Pond and new playground equipment at Sam Johnson Park. We will be presenting these ideas at a future club meeting for your information and discussion. In the meantime, if you have any ideas that you think we should explore, please bring them to the attention of any member of the board.

Noah von Borstel has planned a club social event at the BenDistillery Tasting Room in Tumalo on Friday, February 10. Bring your better half and come prepared for some serious fun and laughs getting to know each other better.
Plans for the Vintner's Dinner and Wine Raffle are well underway. The committee under the leadership of Carl Vertrees and Linda Trout is meeting regularly. However, it is not too late to join in the planning process, so please consider volunteering to help. The event is coming up on April 28t and promises to be an interesting evening filled with terrific wine, food and friends.

This is a major fundraising event for our club, so I hope that you will plan to attend, bring your friends and contribute items to the auction. Because of the $65 per person cost of the event, you will not be pressured to attend.

Our Redmond Kiwanis Club is thriving because we all contribute in some way to its success. This includes each of us promoting the club to our friends and business associates. Tell them about your positive experiences in Kiwanis, invite them to attend a meeting and and ask them to join.

It also means that each of us strives to attend every weekly meeting and support the speakers who graciously give of their time to talk to us about their passions. And, lastly, it means volunteering at club events and serving on a committee. As your president, I want to say thank you for all you do. This club is flourishing because each one of you gives of your time and unique talents.

Be well. Do good work. And, enjoy our beautiful Central Oregon winter.

WINE ROUND-UP THEME OF VINTNER'S DINNER APRIL 28

Eight members attended the initial committee meeting on Jan. 11 for the vintner's dinner.

Redmond Kiwanis' Wine Round-Up, the 8th Annual Dinner and Auction is the name chosen to carry out a western theme April 28 at the Eagle Crest Convention Center.

The wine raffle will again be run in tandem with the dinner, starting in February with the drawing on May 2. Noah von Borstel is chairing that event again this year.

The dinner is a five-course meal with a wine paired to each course. Price of tickets is $65. Corporate tables for eight persons are $650.
The wine raffle, first held in 1999, features a drawing for 100 bottles of wine: 60 bottles for first place, 30 bottles for second place, and 10 for third. Tickets are $5 each.

Each member is asked to bring two bottles of wine toward the 100-bottle booty. Noah is hoping to improve the quality of the wine in the raffle this year, so several wine vendors and distributors are being contacted to offer discounts to Kiwanis purchasers. Last year the raffle netted $2,360 for the club's service account.

A new feature is being added to the vintner's dinner this year, a "wine wall." Members of the committee are soliciting donations of 50 bottles of wine valued at more than $20 each, hoping to amass about 25 bottles each of red and white wines.

Dinner attendees will be sold tickets for $20, each coded to one of the donated bottles. That should raise an additional $1,000. The dinner is aimed at those who appreciate wine and want to learn more about it. The vintner or distributor providing the wine will talk about each one and also offer wines for sale at the conclusion of the evening.

The committee is also seeking wine-related items for oral and silent auction items, including special tastings and accommodations in winery areas. Last year the dinner raised about $3,200.

WHAT I WORE GEARS UP FOR WINTER SPRING FORMAL SEASON

Area high schools are staging winter formals this month, and spring proms are just over the horizon, so the What I Wore committee is seeking new inventories to make formal dresses and accessories available to those who need them and can't afford them.
Michelle Duff is chairing the committee, now in its second year. What I Wore has given away 79 of 379 dresses received in the past year. She is always on the outlook for new and gently used apparel at thrift stores, yard sales and other locations, and welcomes your contributions. The project is especially in need of clutches and handbags, costume jewelry, gloves and silver sandals.
If you have dresses in your closets please consider donating them. In addition, if you know of a young lady who would like to donate or exchange her dress, please direct her to our website, www.whatiworeformals.org or our Facebook page.
A service project of the Kiwanis Club of
Redmond, What I Wore is recognized as a non-profit organization for tax deductible contributions of money or apparel and accessories.
For more information or to learn how you too can receive a deduction for your donations, feel free to contact Michelle or her husband, John, an accountant with Alliance Professionals, LLP. John can be reached at jduff@alliancepros.net or his office, (541) 548-1735. Allow your donations to work for you!

4-H PROGRAM OFFERS TRAVEL CREDITS IN LIMITED FUNDRAISER

Because of her involvement and enthusiasm in Deschutes County 4-H, Deb Oster is selling $20 gift cards in hopes of raising $16,000 to overcome a budget shortfall that threatens a half-time position in the office. Deb explains the program like this:
You sell a gift card for $20, the recipient of the card gets $200 of "credits" with the card. They can apply these credits in percentages of savings when they go online to book a room, rent a car, or purchase merchandise from the website.
For example, the owner of the card may want to go to Portland, so they go to the card website, pull up hotels in Portland, and it will show you how many credits can be used, on average its a 30% reduction in the rate. I called around and it really is cheaper than you can get elsewhere, even at government rates. You can apply these credits until all $200 in credit is used. Then they can re-load the card if they wish. 4H also receives money from the re-loaded amounts. In addition to hotels, the same process can be used to rent cars, buy gift cards, and purchase merchandise. A little bit of planning ahead and the purchaser's $20 goes a very long way.
The $20 they pay for the card helps raise funds for 4-H -- $13 per card to be exact! We have 1,000 cards to sell and 200 more to sell that we will make $20 per card on. After we pay out $1,000 in incentives, that's $16,000 for Deschutes County 4-H.
Cards must be sold by December 15th. I'll bring cards with me to meetings, or anyone interested can email or call me. It could be a great gift idea for our friends, relatives or employees; especially those that travel.
Deb Oster
