Project Concept: Build a playground and park that serves the whole community (0 – 100 years), including those living with disabilities, because everybody deserves a place to play.

Project Mission: To create a fun space of play for the whole community that fosters collaboration, communication and enjoyment for all. Establish Sam Johnson Park as a premier park facility in Central Oregon.

About Sam Johnson Park: Sam Johnson Park was deeded to the City of Redmond in the 1980s for a community park that serves the families and children of Redmond. Kiwanis adopted the park in 1987 and helped raise funds to install the playground structure in 1990.

Need for this Project: Sam Johnson Park is the most centrally located park in the City of Redmond and is wildly popular with the community. However, the playground and facilities are some of the oldest in the park system, and struggles with accessibility. In fact, there is not one playground facility in the City of Redmond that is accessible to people with disabilities. A group of “Moms” approached Redmond City Council to ask them to consider improving the park, and City Council directed City staff to work with the “Moms” and other
community stakeholders on a new design for the playground and the park.

Funding Needs: The total park design is approximately $1,000,000 with the playground area estimated to be $450,000. Accessible flooring for the playground area is $150,000. The City of Redmond currently has $90,000 budgeted for the project.

Planned Park Design Components: Appropriate programming for all ages is envisioned, including;

Each programming element needs to be accessible to all. Improve accessible connectivity throughout the park, and mitigate conflict between pass‐through bicycle/pedestrian/vehicular traffic and park
users.
