THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Being a member of the Redmond Kiwanis is always a pleasure; however, at this time of year it makes me proud to know that we can again have a positive impact on the lives of kids in our community. Please keep in mind that as we enter the holiday season there are several ways that you can stay involved with Kiwanis!
Our next fundraiser is the See’s Candy sales beginning Nov. 30. The candy sales will take place inside the Sears building again. This year we will need many more volunteers than we have had in past years because we will be selling on more days. If you are able to donate your time please contact Dottie McMenamy at 541-548-0322 or dmcmenamy@isp.com.
Our annual Ding-A-Ling event is coming up on Saturday, Dec. 19. It is tradition that the Redmond Kiwanis supports the local Salvation Army in raising money on one Saturday in December by ringing bells at several of the retail stores in town.
Historically it has proven to be one of the most success fundraising events Salvation Army has throughout the holiday season. Carl Anderson has led the event for us for 24 years. He needs to step down from the leadership role, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his years of service for this event.
One of our new members, John Bruce, has graciously volunteered to take over the leadership, and I encourage you to contact him to sign up to volunteer! The time slots for volunteering are still to be determined but will most likely be from 10- 6 with two-hour time commitments. You can reach John at jwbruce39@gmail.com or call at 541-526-1454.
Our annual holiday party on Dec. 16 will be a presentation from Kevin CampbellWhite and the Children’s Theatre hand bell choir. This is one of my favorite meetings of the year and it is a great opportunity to invite spouses, friends, or co-workers to attend and get in the holiday spirit!
I hope you all have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
Yours in Service, Katie

JOHN BRUCE CHAIRS DING-A-LING EFFORT IN 25TH YEAR
Each year Redmond Kiwanians devote one Saturday in December to bell ringing for the Salvation Army at various retail locations throughout the community.
In the first 24 years, Carl Anderson chaired the community service effort. For year 25 John Bruce has assumed the challenge of balancing the Salvation Army’s request to cover more stations for 10 instead of 8 hours with our limited manpower.
The easiest decision has been made: Our effort will be on Saturday, Dec. 19.
Kiwanis role in the fundraising effort is two-fold. Because of our enthusiasm and the number of people we know in the community, we have consistently raised more money in a single day than any other group of volunteers, and more than the paid seasonal employees. Our volunteering also saves the payroll expense that day of those workers.
John began evaluating the number of hours and locations at the Nov. 18 meeting by having members sign up for two-hour shifts. He can likely factor in volunteers from our Key Clubs at Redmond and Ridgeview high schools. The Ridgeview Key Club wanted to pursue a bell ringing project on its own on another date, but the Salvation Army requires those responsible to be at least 18 years of age.
In the past we have rung the bells from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at five locations: Fred Meyer, Bi-Mart, Safeway and two doors at Wal-Mart. This year the Salvation Army is asking that we add Albertson’s and the second entry to Fred Meyer and that we ring the bells from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
In 2014 we collected $1,616. If you want to reserve your time slot while the selection is good, call John at 541-526-1454.
SEE’S CANDY SALES TO BEGIN NOVEMBER 30 INSIDE SEARS
For the fourth year, Redmond Kiwanis will be selling See’s Candy as a fundraising project before Christmas.
This year we’ll be selling seven days a week beginning Monday, Nov. 30.
Dottie McMenamy and Cindy Trainor are again chairing the project which has netted about $4,000 for the club each of the past three years.
After operating from a travel trailer in the Sears parking lot the first two years, the inventory moved inside the retail store last year providing more room and comfort for our sales team and customers.
Members are asked to sign up for 2- or 3-hour shifts Monday through Saturday or 4 hours on Sundays. Standard hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday hours are 1 to 5.
Cindy and Dottie are seeking one person for each shift, but recommend that you bring a friend or spouse with you to make the time go by more quickly.
To sign up for your shift, call them at 541-548-0322, or email Cindy at cing68@gmail.com
Cindy also noted they can supply inventory for candy sales in your business. “Together with your help, we can make this another very successful year,” Cindy said.
BICYCLE RAFFLE TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR PLAYGROUND
Green Plow Coffee donated two bicycles as a fundraiser for the Sam Johnson Park playground last month, but only 12 tickets were sold at Oktoberfest.
Club members decided at the Oct. 21 meeting that they would continue the raffle throughout the See’s Candy sales campaign at Sears. Tickets are available for $5.

A resident of Redmond for the past 6 years, Mark Purkey was regularly exposed to Kiwanis in Albany for many years. Now that he is almost through traveling for an international mission organization, he seized the opportunity to join after Amy Fisher encouraged him.
Mark and wife Diana have six children and live on a small acreage in southwest Redmond. In May they opened Redmond Family Bible Church which meets at the Redmond Grange Hall.
Originally from Milwaukie, he and Diana met at the University of Oregon where he wrestled. He received his divinity degree from Western Evangelical Seminary which has become George Fox University.
In his leisure, Mark enjoys raising livestock, hiking, hunting, fishing and music.
I don’t like political jokes. I’ve seen too many of them get elected!
LACKING AT THE PARK: A MERRY-GO-ROUND
When the cost of the Sam Johnson Park kept climbing, the City of Redmond picked up those expenses from its reserve accounts, but there weren’t enough funds for the $55,000 accessible merry-go-round, made only in Germany.
Hence, Phase 1.5 of the Sam Johnson Park Renovation. Kiwanis is attempting to raise that $55,000 deficit by selling engraved paver bricks at the entrance to the playground. $48,900 remains to be raised.
For a minimum of $100, community members can have their names engraved on a standard size brick, or for a minimum of $5,000, they can have a double-sized brick.
Checks should be made out to the Redmond Kiwanis Foundation. They can be mailed to P.O. Box 253, Redmond, or given to Gary Ollerenshaw or Linda Trout.
MINUTES OF KIWANIS BOARD MEETING – November 16, 2015
The meeting was called to order at noon by President Katie Mercer in Conference Room A at City Hall. Other board members present were Dan Tippy, Eric Coughlin, Peter Ribble, Anne Graham, Jessica George, Carl Vertrees, Randy Marvin, Roland White, Dan Young, Gary Ollerenshaw, John Duff and Noah von Borstel. Also attending were John Bruce, Amber Wilson and Dave Shirley. A quorum was established.
Minutes of the October board meeting as distributed by email and published in the October newsletter were approved.
Committee reports:
Meetings: Michael Leeland has programs scheduled through the end of December.
Finance: John Duff presented the financial report for October showing balances of $2,335 in the administrative accounts and $19,257 in the service accounts. The major service expense in October was $2,025 for a protective railing at Sam Johnson Park playground. Dues receipts and expenditures will be reflected in the November figures. The report was accepted.
Membership: Numbers stand at 58. Peter Ribble reported he is working with Eric Coughlin to update the club’s orientation presentation.
Youth services: Dan Tippy said the Key Club at Ridgeview High School is contemplating adopting a Saturday or its own to ring bells for the Salvation Army.
Spiritual aims: David Foote and Eileen Andrewson have recently lost a son. Public relations: Carl Vertrees said next efforts would be devoted to the See’s Candy sales in December.
Interclubs: Peter Ribble said his goal is to have three interclubs to each of the clubs in Division 78 during this year. He will begin scheduling after Thanksgiving.
Salvation Army Bell Ringing: John Bruce, who is assuming the chairmanship from Carl Anderson, reported our day of service has been set for Saturday, Dec. 19. Other details are still under discussion. The new commander of the Salvation Army would like us to cover seven locations instead of five from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. instead of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Board members expressed concern that that was too many hours at too many locations for our available volunteers. Amber Wilson informed the board that the Ridgeview High School softball team may be seeking Kiwanis volunteer help for a casino night either on New Year’s Eve or for Valentine’s Day.
Food events policy: Confusion arose during Oktoberfest among members and other volunteers about whom if anyone is entitled to complimentary food. The board essentially left that decision to each event’s chairs, but asked that the policy be clearly communicated in advance, keeping in mind that fundraising is the goal at most of our food events. A membership application from Mark Purkey was approved. He was sponsored by Dan Young.
Requests: The board deferred action on a request from the Redmond School District to help sponsor a recognition event for teachers in April. Members said we should continue to concentrate on funding projects more directly affecting youth.
Central Christian School is seeking more than $2 million in community support in the second year of its capital campaign. The board referred that request to the Redmond Kiwanis Foundation.
Dan Tippy has prepared a rough draft of a solicitation letter our chairs and members can distribute when seeking public support for Kiwanis programs. He is emailing it to board members for their input.
Peter Ribble and Dave Shirley are designing new banners reflecting our projects and organizations we support that can be displayed at events such as our See’s Candy sales booth at Sears.
Kiwanis is a Verb, a booklet about Kiwanis activities and principles, is in its fifth printing. Peter Ribble urged the club to buy 50 copies at $3.20 each to be distributed to new members. The board approved.
Dave Shirley said it’s been about a year since his last redesign of the Redmond Kiwanis website. He was granted concurrence to update it.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:06 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Carl Vertrees, secretary
